MLS Laser Therapy

What is MLS Laser Therapy — and why do we use it in dentistry?

MLS (Multiwave Locked System) Laser Therapy is a non-invasive, pain-free treatment that uses synchronised laser light to reduce pain, decrease inflammation, and accelerate soft tissue healing. At Champions for Oral Health, it is offered as a complement to many dental procedures to make your recovery faster and more comfortable.

Unlike traditional pain management — which treats symptoms after the fact — MLS Laser works at the cellular level to trigger your body's own healing response. The result is less swelling, less discomfort, and faster recovery from day one.

MLS Laser Therapy is used at Champions for Oral Health alongside implant surgery, extractions, periodontal treatment, and TMJ therapy — reducing post-operative pain and swelling so you heal faster.

What is MLS

What is the difference between MLS Laser Therapy and LLLT (Low-Level Laser Therapy)?

This is one of the most common questions patients ask — and the difference matters when it comes to results.

The dual-wavelength approach is what makes MLS unique. The two wavelengths work together in a reinforcing, synchronised manner — delivering results that neither wavelength can achieve alone. This is why MLS is considered the more advanced and clinically effective option.

MLS — Multiwave Locked System

  • Uses two synchronised wavelengths (808nm + 905nm)

  • Reaches deeper tissue for greater effect

  • Anti-inflammatory, anti-edema, and analgesic — simultaneously

  • Both immediate and lasting relief

  • Effective as a stand-alone or adjunct therapy

LLLT — Low-Level Laser Therapy

  • Uses a single wavelength of light

  • Limited to surface-level biostimulation

  • Requires many sessions for results

  • Longer treatment times per visit

  • Seldom effective as a stand-alone treatment

How does MLS work

How does MLS Laser Therapy work?

MLS Laser Therapy works by delivering focused light energy into tissue, triggering a specific biological response at the cellular level — a process known as photobiomodulation. It is often compared to how plants convert sunlight into energy through photosynthesis: the light activates a chain of healing reactions from the inside out.

At the cellular level, MLS Laser Therapy:

  • Increases local blood flow and oxygen delivery to damaged tissue

  • Promotes tissue repair, regeneration, and remodelling

  • Stimulates the immune response for faster infection control

  • Improves lymphatic drainage — reducing swelling and fluid retention

  • Inhibits pain signals at the nerve level for immediate relief

  • Enhances the body's natural healing cascade at the source

  • The two wavelengths used in MLS — 808nm (continuous) and 905nm (pulsed) — are delivered simultaneously in a synchronised pattern. This is what produces both immediate pain relief and long-lasting anti-inflammatory effects, rather than just one or the other.

What is MLS

Which dental procedures benefit from MLS Laser Therapy?

At Champions for Oral Health in Fairfax, VA, MLS Laser Therapy is offered as a complement to a wide range of dental treatments — particularly those involving tissue healing or post-operative discomfort.

Is MLS Laser Therapy safe — and is it right for everyone?

MLS Laser Therapy is considered a safe, non-invasive, and well-tolerated treatment for the vast majority of patients. It is pain-free, requires no anaesthesia, and has no known systemic side effects. Sessions are brief — typically completed in under 10 minutes alongside your dental appointment.

There are some situations where MLS Laser Therapy is not recommended:

  • Active infections or open wounds with suspected bacterial spread

  • Bleeding disorders or patients on anticoagulant therapy

  • Known or suspected cancerous tumours in the treatment area

  • Patients with hypersensitivity or known photosensitising conditions

  • Directly over a developing foetus during pregnancy

A clinical evaluation is always completed before treatment to confirm suitability. If MLS Laser is not appropriate for your situation, we will always tell you clearly and discuss the best alternatives.
